Swimmer’s itch has been reported in the Lakes area this month.
The itchy rash is caused by an allergic reaction to microscopic parasites that are naturally present in some lakes where waterfowl and aquatic snails are found. The parasites cannot survive in humans and are not considered a serious health threat, but they can cause itching, red bumps, and small blisters.
The CDC recommends avoiding areas where swimmer’s itch has been reported, limiting time in shallow shoreline waters, and showering or vigorously towel drying immediately after leaving the lake. Most cases clear up on their own within about a week. Anti-itch creams, cool compresses, and oatmeal baths may help relieve symptoms.
