The Detroit Lakes School Board is reviewing proposed changes to a policy concerning nonschool-sponsored materials in district buildings, as a lawsuit challenges an earlier board action.
The board reviewed Policy 505 Monday night, which addresses the distribution of nonschool-sponsored materials on school property by students and employees.
The issue dates back to July, when the board voted four-to-two to remove all nonschool-sponsored items from district schools.
In August, the board considered a resolution prepared by district legal counsel that would have postponed the July action. That motion ended in a three-to-three tie and failed.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota filed a lawsuit September 22 on behalf of two Detroit Lakes students and their parents. The lawsuit challenges the district’s action and specifically references rainbow stickers, posters, flags and buttons.
Fourteen people were scheduled to address the school board during public comment Monday night.
