Fall colors will soon begin appearing across Minnesota, and the Department of Natural Resources is launching its 2026 fall color resources this week.
The DNR says shorter days and cooler temperatures are the biggest factors determining when leaves change color. Drought conditions across much of Minnesota could affect the timing and brilliance of this year’s colors, with some trees potentially changing or dropping their leaves earlier than usual.
Fall colors typically peak in Minnesota from late September through mid-October, beginning in the northern part of the state and moving south.
The DNR’s Fall Color Finder map will be updated every Thursday through the end of October. The map tracks the progression of fall colors at state parks and recreation areas across Minnesota.
DNR Commissioner Sarah Strommen encourages everyone to get out and enjoy Minnesota this fall.
The Fall Color Finder is available at mndnr.gov/fallcolor, where people can also sign up for weekly fall color updates and find tips for enjoying the season.
