Detroit Lakes , MN (KDLM) – The NBA regular season tips off Tuesday, and the Minnesota Timberwolves start their year Wednesday night in Miami with one of the most talked-about rosters in the league.
The Wolves take on the Heat at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN. It’s a debut night for both teams. Giannis Antetokounmpo plays his first game for Miami, and Minnesota unveils new point guard LaMelo Ball in a starting backcourt with Anthony Edwards.
Minnesota went all in over the summer. The team traded Julius Randle and Naz Reid in a five-team deal to land Ball, a former All-Star from Charlotte. Both Ball and Edwards are 25 and entering the prime of their careers. The Wolves also signed forward Jonathan Kuminga to a two-year deal to shore up power forward, and they re-signed guard Ayo Dosunmu.
Rudy Gobert and Jaden McDaniels return to anchor the defense under head coach Chris Finch.
The national spotlight reflects the buzz. Minnesota is scheduled for 27 nationally televised games, including a Christmas Day home game against Oklahoma City.
The Wolves will be without guard Donte DiVincenzo, who is recovering from an Achilles injury.
Minnesota went 49-33 last season and lost to San Antonio in the Western Conference semifinals. It was the team’s third straight deep playoff run; the franchise has won five playoff series in the last three years after winning just two in its first 34 seasons.
The home opener is Sunday, October 25th, at Target Center. Other dates to circle include Naz Reid’s return with the Hornets on January 29th and the retirement of Kevin Garnett’s No. 21 against Boston on February 28th.
The regular season opens Tuesday with three games, including the Knicks raising their championship banner against LeBron James and the Philadelphia 76ers.
