Detroit Lakes , MN (KDLM)-

Becker County residents can keep their Halloween pumpkins out of the landfill by taking them to a local composting collection site.

The county is encouraging residents to bring their pumpkins and other food scraps to one of several free collection sites. The material will be composted rather than thrown away.

In Frazee, pumpkins can be dropped off at 222 Main Avenue West. Detroit Lakes has two locations: the parking lot near the Kent Freeman Arena at 1308 Rossman Avenue, and 504 Davis Avenue.

Other collection sites are available in Audubon, Lake Park, Burlington Township, Shoreham and at the Becker County Transfer Station.

Residents can place their pumpkins in the designated containers at the sites.

Becker County is also offering free at home composting kits. They can be picked up at the Becker County Landfill or on the third floor of the Becker County Courthouse.
