Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – Minnesota Wild defenseman Brock Faber will miss the start of the regular season, and possibly much longer, after surgery to repair a fractured skull.
The 24-year-old was hit in the side of the head by a puck during the Wild’s preseason finale against Dallas on Friday, September 25th. The shot caught him near the ear, a spot his helmet doesn’t cover. Faber skated to the bench on his own and stayed in the game for a short time before he was pulled and taken to the hospital.
Faber had successful surgery on Sunday and is now resting at home. Wild general manager Bill Guerin says he is doing well, but the team has not set a timetable for his return.
The Wild placed Faber on injured reserve and added rookie defenseman David Spacek to the opening-night roster.
Faber was set to open the season alongside Quinn Hughes on Minnesota’s top defensive pair. He is coming off the best season of his career, with 15 goals and 52 points, and won an Olympic gold medal with Team USA earlier this year. The former Minnesota Gophers captain signed an eight-year, $70 million contract extension with the Wild in 2024.
