Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The Minnesota Twins open a six-game homestand tonight against the one team standing between them and the playoffs.
Cleveland arrives at Target Field holding the final American League Wild Card spot at 74-73. The Twins are 69-77, four and a half games back with 16 games left in the regular season. First pitch is at 7:10 p.m.
Because the Guardians are the team Minnesota is chasing, every win this weekend counts twice in the standings. A three-game sweep would pull the Twins to within a game and a half. Losing the series would leave them effectively out of it.
Toronto and Texas are also in the mix behind Cleveland, so the final spot could change hands more than once over the next two weeks.
The series wraps up Sunday afternoon. The New York Yankees, second in the AL East at 84-62, come to Target Field Monday for the back half of the homestand.
