Detroit Lakes , MN (KDLM)-
M State plans to close its Detroit Lakes campus, with the closure expected no earlier than summer 2028.
After years of evaluating options, M State says closing the campus is the most responsible way to address declining enrollment and the cost of maintaining the large, aging facility. The college says the decision is intended to strengthen its long term sustainability.
The closure is projected to save about one million dollars a year in operating expenses and avoid more than 18 million dollars in future building investments. The college emphasizes that it is financially strong and that the decision is not due to financial trouble.
M State will continue operating its other campuses in Fergus Falls, Moorhead and Wadena, along with its online programs.
The nursing and radiologic technology programs currently offered in Detroit Lakes will also continue. Radiologic technology is expected to eventually move to Moorhead, while the college is pursuing an agreement with a local partner to keep nursing education in Detroit Lakes.
The closure recommendation still requires approval from the Minnesota State Board of Trustees.
A public question and answer meeting is scheduled for November 5th, giving community members an opportunity to learn more.
