DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – Detroit Lakes residents were in for a surprise, Thursday when a bear was spotted within city limits.
A photo of the bear was taken and posted to social media as it walked along the McKinley Plaza in Detroit Lakes, it was also spotted in a tree along Lori Ave. in Detroit Lakes around 4:30 p.m.
Black bear sightings are on the rise in Minnesota, as this summer’s drought has made it harder for the bears to find the food they need to prepare for hibernation. This time of year, Minnesota’s black bears are trying to eat as many as 10,000 to 15,000 calories a day.
Bears are now increasingly seeking out food sources in populated areas where they are not normally seen.
