Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The Minnesota Wild outshot the Calgary Flames by a wide margin Thursday night but couldn’t solve goaltender Devin Cooley, falling 2-1 in Calgary.
Cooley turned aside 36 shots and stopped the first 24 Minnesota put on net before Michael McCarron got the Wild on the board in the third period. The goal was McCarron’s first of the season.
Both Calgary goals came on the power play in the first period. Aydar Suniev put the Flames up 1-0 at 10:49 of the opening frame. Joel Farabee doubled the lead at 14:06 on another man advantage, knocking in a rebound after Jesper Wallstedt stopped the first shot from Morgan Frost.
The Wild pressed hard in the third, outshooting Calgary 17-3 in the period and pulling Wallstedt late for an extra skater, but couldn’t find the equalizer. Wallstedt finished with 20 saves.
Former Wild center Ben Jones made his season debut for Calgary, which played without captain Mikael Backlund because of an upper-body injury.
The loss is Minnesota’s second straight after a 4-3 overtime loss at Edmonton on Tuesday that opened a five-game road trip. The Wild are now 6-3-2 on the season.
Minnesota continues the trip against the Seattle Kraken.
