Homelessness Often Hidden in Becker County

Detroit Lakes , MN (KDLM)-

Homelessness in Becker County may not always be visible, but local leaders say it is affecting more people in the community than many realize.

That was the message Wednesday morning during a Coffee and Community Chamber event focused on understanding homelessness in Becker County.

Meagan Hernandez of Mahube-Otwa, Sara Peterson of First Lutheran Church and Ally Hefta, homeless student liaison for Detroit Lakes Schools, discussed some of the challenges facing individuals and families without stable housing.

Homelessness doesn’t always mean living on the street. Some people are living in cars or campers, staying with family or friends, or living in places without adequate heat.

Also, homelessness is not necessarily the result of someone not working.

Some people have jobs but still can’t keep up with rent and other bills as housing costs and other expenses outpace their income.

Presenters also emphasized the importance of helping people before they become homeless, including those who are behind on rent or at immediate risk of losing their home.

Once someone becomes homeless, there can be additional barriers to getting back on their feet. Those can include not having a computer or phone, having an eviction on their record, or not having transportation to get to work or school.

Stigma can also prevent people from seeking help. Some parents fear their children could be taken away because they don’t have stable housing, while others are simply embarrassed or afraid to ask for assistance. Most people experiencing homelessness aren’t looking for a handout.

The presenters encouraged people to look beyond the stereotypes of homelessness, and to reach out when they see someone struggling. They say offering a listening ear, connecting someone with local resources, or simply treating people with dignity can make a difference.
