Detroit Lakes , MN (KDLM) – Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray is in the NFL’s concussion protocol, and head coach Kevin O’Connell says there’s no telling yet whether he’ll play Sunday in Chicago.
“He is in the protocol, so we’ll defer to the medical folks in that protocol for how the week goes,” O’Connell told reporters Monday at the team’s Eagan facility. “We’ll just take it a day at a time.”
O’Connell said Murray arrived at the facility “feeling pretty good” Monday morning and has been able to sit in on team meetings and watch film without his symptoms getting worse. Murray’s debut with Minnesota lasted 11 plays.
He scrambled on a third-and-7, and Packers linebacker Lukas Van Ness got a hand on his helmet before safety Javon Bullard drove a shoulder into the side of his head, knocking the helmet off and drawing an unnecessary roughness flag. Murray stayed down for several minutes before walking off on his own.
Veteran Carson Wentz took over and led the Vikings to a 39-22 win over Green Bay at U.S. Bank Stadium. “That’s why he’s here,” O’Connell said of Wentz.
If Murray doesn’t clear protocol, Wentz is expected to start Sunday at Soldier Field — the 100th start of his career.The league’s protocol is a five-step process, with an independent neurological consultant assigned to each team making the final call on clearance.
