Vikings Name Eight Captains For 2026 Season

Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – New starting quarterback Kyler Murray is one of eight team captains the Minnesota Vikings will carry into the 2026 season.

The team announced the group Thursday. Murray joins wide receiver Justin Jefferson, running back Aaron Jones Sr. and tackle Brian O’Neill on offense. Linebackers Blake Cashman and Andrew Van Ginkel and safety Joshua Metellus are the defensive captains, and long snapper Andrew DePaola is the lone special teams captain. Every player on the roster voted.

Murray, who came to Minnesota as a free agent out of Arizona and was named the starter in August, is a captain for the first time in his first season with the club. The nod went to J.J. McCarthy a year ago; McCarthy is now the backup. O’Neill is a captain for the sixth consecutive season and DePaola for the third straight year. The Vikings open the regular season Sunday, September 13th, hosting Green Bay at 3:25 p.m. at U.S. Bank Stadium.
