Support Available for Rural Mental Health During Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

Otter Tail County, MN – Communities across Minnesota are marking Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in September with the “Every Season Matters” campaign, an effort to support the mental health of farmers, ranchers and rural residents.

Farming brings pride and purpose, but it also brings pressure. Long hours, financial uncertainty, unpredictable weather and the responsibility of providing for others can take a toll. Suicide Prevention Awareness Month is a reminder that help is available, and that seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Prairie Lakes Community Health, which serves Otter Tail and Wilkin counties, encourages residents to learn the warning signs of emotional distress and to check in on people who may be struggling. A shared meal, a phone call or a visit can remind someone they are valued.

Farmers, ranchers and rural families can call the Minnesota Farm & Rural Helpline for free, confidential support. The helpline connects callers with people who understand the pressures of agricultural life and offers emotional support, stress counseling, financial and legal consultation, and referrals to local resources.
