A Reminder About E-Cigarette Disposal

If you have an old or unwanted e-cigarette sitting around the house, there’s a safer way to get rid of it than putting it in the trash or recycling bin.

Residents are reminded that e-cigarettes should be taken to a household hazardous waste collection site for proper disposal.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, e-cigarettes contain nicotine and lithium batteries. The batteries can be damaged in trash compactors and recycling equipment, potentially causing fires at waste facilities or during transportation.

Nicotine is also toxic and can be harmful to workers and the environment if it’s not disposed of properly.

So, the next time you’re cleaning out a drawer and come across an old vape or e-cigarette, don’t toss it in the garbage or recycling. Dispose of it safely. It’s a small step that can help keep our local workers, waste facilities and environment safer.
