Detroit Lakes , MN (KDLM)-

Two families with a nearly 100 year connection to Lake Melissa are teaming up for a bike ride this Friday to support the Lakes Crisis & Resource Center.

The Hathaway and Buchholz families have lived next door to each other on Lake Melissa for nearly a century. Each summer, the families get together for activities including tennis tournaments, mini triathlons and puzzle contests.

Last year, family members ranging in age from 13 to 70 swam across Lake Melissa.

This Friday, August 14th, they’re getting on their bikes for the Ride for a Cause and they’re asking the public to join them.

Ann Hathaway, one of the organizers, says the ride gives the families another way to have fun together while also giving back to a local organization.

Two routes will be available, one approximately 7 miles around Lake Melissa and another nearly 14.5 miles.

The event is family friendly and is not a race. Riders must be at least 10 years old, helmets are required, and a safety waiver must be completed before riding.

The ride begins at 10:30 Friday morning, with check-in starting at 10:00, at Shady Hollow Flea Market at the intersection of County Road 17 and North Melissa Road.

Registration is 40 dollars, with proceeds benefiting the Lakes Crisis & Resource Center. Participants can also make a donation to support the cause. Additional information is available at https://lakescrisis.com/.
