A suspected tornado caused significant damage Monday evening on the west side of Floyd Lake, just north of Detroit Lakes.
According to the Becker County Sheriff’s Department, two people suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Essentia St. Mary’s in Detroit Lakes for treatment.
Emergency crews continue to assess damage to homes and other properties. Numerous trees and power lines were brought down as the storm moved through the area.
The Sheriff’s Department is asking the public to stay away from the Floyd Lake area while first responders and utility crews conduct damage assessments, restore power, and clear debris. Law enforcement officers are controlling access to damaged areas to protect property and allow emergency personnel to work safely.
M State College on Highway 34 will continue to serve as both the designated emergency shelter for residents displaced by the storm and the Emergency Operations Center coordinating the response.
At this time, emergency officials are not requesting volunteers or donations. They say the public will be notified through official channels if assistance becomes necessary.
An information line is also being established to provide updates and answer questions from residents affected by the storm. Details on how to access the information line will be released as soon as they become available.
Emergency officials thanked the community for its patience, understanding, and cooperation as recovery efforts continue. The National Weather Service has not yet confirmed whether the damage was caused by a tornado, and additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
