Laker Girls Track and Field Finishes Second, Boys Sixth at Bemidji Invite

BEMIDJI, MINN (KDLM) – The Detroit Lakes Lakers Track and Field teams closed out their regular season in Bemidji on Monday evening with a second-place finish for the girls team and a sixth-place finish for the boys.

The Laker girls dominated the field events in Bemidji, highlighted by Jerzie Horner breaking the DLHS pole vault record with a vault of 11-01. The previous record was set by Kylie Foster (11-00) in 2015. It was the third time that a Laker athlete has broken a school record this season (Ethan Carrier/100m dash, Rylee Johnson/100m hurdles). The recently-graduated Horner will vault for UND next season.

Elle Bettcher and Jacee Hauser each set PRs in both the discus and the shot put. Bettcher (117-06) and Hauser (112-2) finished first and second, respectively, in the discus. Hauser (36-09) finished second in shotput, with Bettcher (32-10) placing fourth.

Chelsea Stowe also PR’d in the discus (102-02) for a fifth-place finish.

The Lakers had four high-jumpers finish in the top eight, with Grace Gunderson (5-3) winning the event. Rylee Johnson (5-0) finished second, Mamie Hunter (4-8) was fifth and Tayler Vogt (4-6) placed eighth.

Alonna Moench and Morgan Hausten had podium finishes in the pole vault with Moench tying for fifth (8-06) and Hausten placing seventh (8-06 PR).

In long jump, Mallory Fischer (14-9.5) placed fifth, Mamie Hunter (14-8.75) was sixth, and Hannah Barberg (14-01 PR) was seventh.

Natalie Spinder set a PR in the triple jump with a leap of 32-6.75, which put her in third place overall.

On the track side for the girls, Abby Larson placed first in the 100m (12.72), Rylee Johnson placed first in the 100m hurdles (15.55), and Maddie Blahut was eighth (18.25), Mallory Fischer was fifth in the 300m hurdles (50.76), and Julia Steffl was sixth in the 1600m (5:48.98).

The Laker 4x100m relay team of Ella Paulson, Rylee Johnson, Jerzie Horner, and Abby Larson finished in first place, edging out Moorhead with a time of 50.01 seconds. The Laker 4×200 team of Ella Paulson, Lila Kallstrom, Haydon King, and Mallory Fischer placed third (1:52.43).

On the boys events, Mason Carrier won the shot put with a throw of 49-00, with Lawson Greene finishing sixth (42-00) and Braydon Sjoblom finishing eighth (40-11). Green won the discus event with a throw of 143-06, with Sjoblom finishing fifth (118-07) and Will Martin placing seventh (111-10).

Brady Wirtz PR’d in the 100m dash (11.78), which put him in seventh place.

The Lakers will now get ready to host the Section 8AA Individual Track and Field Meet at Mollberg Field on Saturday, June 3rd with the opportunity for individual athletes to advance to the Class AA Individual State Meet in St. Michael-Albertville on June 9th and 10th.
