DETROIT LAKES, MN (KDLM) – The Detroit Lakes Laker girl’s basketball team won their sixth straight game Tuesday night, defeating the Bemidji Lumberjacks 47-44 at the Lakeshirts Fieldhouse.

The Lakers never trailed in the victory and earned their 15th win. Bemidji, who trailed by as much as 18 points with just over 9 minutes to go, put together a run that cut their deficit to two points with less than a minute remaining in the game, but the Laker defense came up with a stop, and earned the victory.

The Lakers built an early lead in the first half thanks to solid defense and well-timed steals. Detroit Lakes jumped out to a 6-0 lead and built on that lead throughout the first half as DL’s Abby Larson finished the first half with seven points to lead the Lakers in the first half.
DL’s Ellie Lunde also had a solid start to the game and scored six points before she left the court with an ankle injury. Unfortunately, Lunde did not return to the game after being assisted to the training room with 5:28 remaining in the first half.
The Lakers led 25-16 going into the second half. Detroit Lakes turned to Karlee Mace in the second half after Abby Larson got into foul trouble, and Mace led the Lakers in scoring after halftime, scoring 14 of the 22 points Detroit Lakes had in the second half. Mace went on to lead all scorers in the game with 18 points.
Bemidji got back into the game when Gracee Bieber started to connect from long range. Bieber, held to just two points in the first half, finished the game with 15 points and scored three times from beyond the arc. Clara Bieber also picked up a three-pointer in the second half and finished the game with 11 points.
Detroit Lakes struggled down the stretch from the field and the free throw line which gave Bemidji a chance in the final minute. The Lakers shot 7 of 13 from the free-throw line.
The Lumberjacks were called on a backcourt violation with 12 seconds to go and turned the ball back over to the Lakers. Mace made one of two free throws with 2 seconds to go in the game. The Lumberjacks attempted a half-court buzzer-beater, but the shot fell short.
The Lakers have now swept the Lumberjacks this season after beating them on the road on January 10th. Bemidji has lost seven of their last nine games and dropped to 7-11 overall.
Detroit Lakes is now 15-3 overall and will return to action on Thursday night when they host Crosby-Ironton. KDLM will broadcast their game on Thursday, with pregame coverage beginning at 7 pm.
