Sheriff’s Office Planning on Installing 200 Smoke Alarms in Homes Throughout Becker County

DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – The Becker County Sheriff’s Office, area Fire Departments and the Red Cross want to install 200 smoke alarms in Becker County.

The effort is part of the SOUND THE ALARM campaign where volunteers will assist in installing smoke alarms in homes around the county on May 7th.

After a number of house fires in the Lakes Area this winter, Detroit Lakes Fire Chief Ryan Swanson says the timing of this event couldn’t be better, “This past winter we’ve had a few structure fires in our area and we’ve had where the detectors didn’t activate because they were expired, or the houses weren’t even equipped with smoke detectors, so this is really good timing and we’re here to help.”

Those in need of a smoke alarm are encouraged to stop by the Becker County Sheriff’s Office or visit the Red Cross website.

Sheriff Todd Glander says to hit their goal of around 200 alarms installed, they’ll need to visit about 50 homes in the county. That effort will take a number of volunteers and he’s hoping the community can help with the installation which could potentially save lives, “The mission here is if we can save one life.”
