DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – As the snow has begun to melt this week, you may have noticed areas of snow that appear to be sprinkled with dirt.
The small black dots, if you look closely are likely moving, sometimes even jumping!
Those black dots are snow fleas. You’ll see them on warmer days when the snow melts because snow fleas are rising to the surface of the snow in search of new food sources.
While they look a lot like biting, parasitic fleas, snow fleas don’t bite and they are actually great for your lawn and gardens because help decompose organic material.
Spotting Snow Fleas is a good sign that the ecosystem in your yard is healthy and rich in plant matter.
