Mill Building at Phelps Mill Park Undergoing Significant Repairs

Jan 25, 2022 | 9:41 AM

UNDERWOOD (KDLM) – The mill building at Phelps Mill Park in Underwood has been closed for repairs.

The historic Phelps Mill was built in 1889 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, Phelps Mill is a rare example of a late 19th century water-powered flour mill. Due to its historic significance and special nature, Otter Tail County applied for grants to fix the foundation and make other repairs to the mill.

The restoration and repair work are intended to retain as much of the building’s historic fabric as possible, stabilize the structure, and make significant repairs to preserve it into the future.

The work will occur in phases of priority with the repair of the foundation beginning in January. Other work will consist of repairing the boardwalk and covered unloading dock, replacement of damaged windows, repainting exteriors as well as other structural repairs and restoration.

The mill building is expected to reopen in September of 2022.
