Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The Northern Lakes Lightning beat the Laker girls hockey team 10-1 on Thursday night at the Kent Freeman Arena. The loss ended Detroit Lakes’ three-game winning streak.
The Lakers fell behind 4-0 in the first period and were outshot 16-4. Laker goalie Emma Wahl was tested from the drop of the puck and did her best to hold off the top line of the Lightning, who scored two of the four goals in the first period with Senior Riley Fogerty getting the goals.
The Lighting took advantage of open space on a four on four in the second period when Rose Aldridge found the back of the net at the 9:11 mark to make the score 5-0. The Lightning was able to get two goals in the final minutes of the second period, with Riley Fogerty scoring her third and fourth goals seven seconds apart. Detroit Lakes did play much better despite giving up three goals in the second period. They generated 14 shots on Northern Lakes goalie Katherine Stephens who entered the game with an impressive 93.7% save percentage.
The Lightning got on the board three more times in the third period, with Lightning freshmen Corah Menschke scoring twice. Detroit Lakes broke the shutout at the 13:08 mark of the third period, with Rhett Zima scoring the lone Laker goal and Haley Stattelman and Emma Coley getting the assists.
Detroit Lakes was outshot 45 to 29 and could not take advantage of their four powerplays in the game. Detroit Lakes falls to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the Midstate Conference. Northern Lakes, who entered play losing four of their last five games, is now back above .500 at 5-4 on the season. The Lightning is now 2-0 in the Midstate.
On Saturday, Detroit Lakes will look to get back on track when they travel to Litchfield for a 1 pm game.
Boys Hockey: Detroit Lakes had their way against Prairie Center on Thursday night beating them 9-0 at the Expo Arena in Long Prairie.
The Lakers scored two goals in the first period, four goals in the second, and three goals in the third period. Junior Cole Larson, junior Ben Hines, and senior Spencer Bergman each had two goals in the win. The Lakers also got scoring from senior Jordan Fields, junior Jacob Thomas, and sophomore Cole Deraney.
The Lakers outshot Prairie Center 59-16 and junior goalie Josh Mack earned the shutout. The teams played clean hockey with only three penalties called in the game and only one penalty against the Lakers.
The Lakers are now 3-2 on the season and are on a three-game winning streak. Next up, the Lakers will travel to Bemidji to take on the Lumberjacks at 7:15 pm on Tuesday, December 14th. That game can be heard on KDLM with pregame coverage beginning at 6:45 pm.
Boys Basketball: The Lakers boys basketball team fell in overtime to the Hawley Nuggets 81-72. The loss drops the Lakers record to 1-2 on the season. The Lakers will return to the court on Friday, December 17th when they travel to St. Cloud Apollo.
Dance: The Laker dance team had their Midstate Conference meet at Pequot Lakes on Thursday night. The high kick team finished in 3rd place at the meet and the jazz team finished in 1st place. JV jazz took first place and JV kick took second. Next up, the Lakers will host their one and only home meet of the season on Saturday beginning at 11 am.
