Christmas Trees and Greenery Could be Hiding Dangerous Pests

Dec 1, 2021 | 9:05 AM

DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is reminding residents that insects and diseases can hitchhike on Christmas trees and other holiday greenery.

Products sold for the holiday season have the potential to introduce pests that can affect the Lakes Area’s native plant communities and agricultural commodities.

Residents are encouraged to inspect their holiday greenery, and if signs of pests or diseases contact the MDA. After the holidays, do not toss trees and greenery into backyard woods or residential compost piles which could propagate the infestation. The MDA says the best option is to bring your tree to a designated drop-off site.
