DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – A Detroit Lakes resident appears to be the victim of an online puppy scam.

On Wednesday, the Detroit Lakes Police responded to a call where a Detroit Lakes resident indicated they had paid someone $300 for a puppy that was being advertised on Facebook. When they went to pick up the puppy, the address didn’t exist and the online advertisement had been taken down.

According to the Better Business Bureau, a shocking 80% of sponsored advertisements online about pets may be fake. A vast majority of pet scams are believed to be puppy sale scams with less than 10% of victims of the scam actually reporting the incident.

Experts say don’t buy a pet without seeing it in person. Do an internet search of the picture of the pet you are considering. If the same picture appears on multiple websites, you may be dealing with a fraud. and never pay a stranger with a money order or through Western Union or Moneygram.
