DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – Lakes Area residents are being warned of a possible Change-of-Address scam that has hit the area.
On Monday, Nov. 8 a Detroit Lakes resident was alerted they may have been a victim of the scam by their postal carrier.
The scam, involves a scammer changing their victims address with the United States Postal Service to then steal the victim’s information, including collecting credit card bills and other important documents so that they can then easily access the victim’s personal information.
The attempted address change in Detroit Lakes had a New Jersey postal code. The postmaster reported the incident to LifeLock and the case is under investigation.
The USPS says the best way to protect yourself from this type of scam is to sign up for credit monitoring and to have a freeze put on your credit. Additionally, you should keep a close watch on your mail. Don’t let it build up in your mailbox or on your front porch for days at a time.
