Class A State Cross Country Preview: Perham, Staples-Motley, Park Rapids, Hawley All Competing for State Titles

By Zeke Fuhrman Nov 4, 2021 | 12:31 PM

(KDLM) – After being canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Minnesota State Cross Country Meet returns to St. Olaf on Saturday, November 6th with a number of area teams and individuals competing for state championships.

The MSHSL changed high school cross country from a two-class system to a three-class system last spring, so there will be six races (three boys, three girls) beginning at 9:30 am on Saturday.

Four area schools will be competing for state championships in Class A: Perham, Staples-Motley, Park Rapids and Hawley.

Perham, coached by Jeff Morris, claimed the 8A title for both boys and girls teams. The Perham boys cross country team is making its 20th consecutive State appearance, and the Perham girls are headed to State for the 19th straight season. Perham’s boys team is seeking their fourth-straight state title, with senior Jakob McCleary trying to become Perham’s first individual state champion since Keeghan Hurley in 2013. Perham’s girls team is also the three-time defending state champion in Class A, and has won four of the last five Class A meets.

Both Staples-Motley teams, coached by Bruce Fuhrman, won their respective 6A titles. Both Cardinal teams are competing at St. Olaf for the third consecutive year after they both finished 5th overall in 2019 and are looking for their first state titles since 2013.

The Hawley Nuggets girls team, coached by Nathan Stoa, is making their second-ever trip to the state meet after taking 13th place in 2019. The Nuggets were runners-up to Perham in Class 8A.

Park Rapids Area’s boys team, coached by Patrick Richard, was the runner-up to Perham in Class 8A, and are competing in the state meet for the first time since 2012.

The Class A State Boys Cross Country Race begins at 12:00 on Saturday, with the Girls race beginning at 1:00. Prep Spotlight TV will have coverage of the State Cross Country Meet. Multiple cameras will be set up around the course so that you can view as much of the race as possible. You can purchase a streaming package by Class or get an All-Access Pass here.
