Laker Boys Soccer Loses at Home to the Comets

Sep 3, 2021 | 9:41 AM

DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – On Thursday night, Detroit Lakes battled Hillcrest Lutheran Academy at Rotary Soccer Park, and the Lakers fell 3-2 to the Comets. From the opening whistle to the end of the game, the rain poured, causing some less than ideal conditions for soccer. However, that did not phase Hillcrest’s Endre Okland as the Junior attacker scored all three goals for the Comets as they picked up their first win of the season to move to 1-1.

The Lakers scored the game’s first goal at the 12-minute mark of the 1st half when Sophomore Noah Meyer beat goaltender Steffen Synnevaag of Hillcrest on a breakaway. The Comets answered back less than 10 minutes later when Okland beat DL keeper Evan Thomas after a bad bounce in front of the net. The Lakers retook the lead minutes later when Meyer scored his second goal of the game from a long-distance beating Synnevaag in the top right corner of the goal.
Unfortunately, Meyer suffered an injury on the play and, due to concussion protocol, could not return to the game. With Detroit Lakes losing their top goal scorer, the Comets took advantage, scoring two unanswered goals and maintaining the attack in the second half on their way to victory.
Hillcrest outshot Detroit Lakes 13 to 6 and had the majority of the scoring chances.
Detroit Lakes drops to 0-3 on the season. The Lakers will hope for better weather and a better result as they will return to Rotary Soccer Park on Tuesday night when they host the Crookston Pirates. The Pirates enter play with an 0-2 record after having their match yesterday postponed with Melrose.
