Detroit Lakes , MN (KDLM)-
With Minnesota’s firearms deer hunting season opening November 7, hunters across Becker County are preparing for another season, and local meat processors are getting ready for a busy few weeks.
Tanner Bachmann of Lakes Processing in Detroit Lakes says the basic cost of cutting and wrapping a deer is about 155 dollars, with additional charges for specialty products such as sausage.
Bachmann says Lakes Processing received approximately 800 deer in just 14 days last year. Despite the high volume, he says they work hard to have the processed meat back to hunters within a few weeks.
According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the state has a long-term annual harvest target of about 200,000 deer. Hunters harvested approximately 186,000 deer in 2025, a nine-percent increase over the previous year.
The DNR expects more than 400,000 hunters to participate in Minnesota’s firearms deer season this year and reminds hunters that deer must be registered within 48 hours of harvest and before processing.
