Detroit Lakes , MN (KDLM)- Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is saying that he accepts responsibility for not doing more than he did to stop state wide fraud in state government programs.
Walz said at the Minnesota Star Tribune’s North Star Summit Tuesday that he should have been pushing state agencies a lot harder when concerns were arising and when warning signs showed up.
There is an estimated $9 billion in statewide fraud that has occurred dating back to 2013. Walz has served two terms, and started his first term in 2019.
In 2020, there was a federal food aid program that defrauded over $250 million in supposed meals that were given to low income children during the COVID pandemic. 68 people have been convicted in connection. There has also been fraud in state run social services programs that emerged in 2024 and 2025.
Walz decided not to run for a third term this November in light of the fraud, and he will be leaving office next January.
