Vikings GM Expects McCarthy On Week One Roster

Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – Minnesota Vikings general manager Nolan Teasley says quarterback J.J. McCarthy will still be on the roster when the season opens.

Teasley told reporters Wednesday that McCarthy’s job now is development, not competition. Asked directly whether he expected McCarthy on the Week One roster, the general manager answered, “I do.”

The 23-year-old lost the starting job to Kyler Murray about two weeks into training camp, and the Vikings have not said where he lands on the depth chart behind him. Veteran Carson Wentz is also on the 53-man roster. Teasley would not clear it up, saying only, “I wouldn’t really necessarily comment on depth immediately.”McCarthy hurt his ankle in the second preseason game and missed the finale against Denver.

Teasley said he has been a full participant in practice the last two days. The Vikings took McCarthy 10th overall in the 2024 draft. He missed his rookie year with a knee injury and went 6-4 in 10 starts last season. He is the only quarterback on the roster signed beyond this year; both Murray and Wentz are set to hit unrestricted free agency after it. Minnesota opens against Green Bay.
