Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – Detroit put up five runs in the top of the 12th inning Wednesday night to beat the Twins 11-6 at Target Field, spoiling Minnesota’s bid for a three-game sweep.
Tommy Nance took the loss after giving up five runs, four earned, on three hits over an inning and a third. He also surrendered a home run to Spencer Torkelson.
The Twins had trailed 5-2 heading into the eighth before a three-run inning pulled them even. Both teams scored once in the 11th, and the game stayed tied until Detroit broke it open in the 12th. Javier Báez and John Peck each drove in three runs for the Tigers, and Max Clark went 3-for-6 with three doubles and scored three times.
Minnesota managed nine hits and hit just .200 as a team, going 4-for-21 with runners in scoring position. Brooks Lee had three of those hits. Royce Lewis drove in two. Starter Dean Kremer lasted four innings and allowed four runs on six hits.
Detroit finished with 14 hits, eight of them for extra bases. Kyle Finnegan picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief.
The loss ends a stretch in which the Twins had beaten the Tigers 11-1 on Monday and 15-2 on Tuesday. Minnesota is off Thursday before opening a three-game set at the Chicago White Sox on Friday, September 4th. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m.
