Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The battle for the Vikings’ backup quarterback job is heating up. Minnesota closes out the preseason tonight when it visits the Denver Broncos.
Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. at Empower Field at Mile High.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell said this week that he wants to see all three of his quarterbacks in action: Carson Wentz, J.J. McCarthy and Max Brosmer. With Kyler Murray holding the starting job, tonight is the last live audition before Minnesota trims its roster to 53 players on Sunday.
Wentz has been the sharper of the two backup contenders. He has completed 18 of 25 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown this preseason. McCarthy is nine of 17 for 115 yards with no touchdowns. McCarthy is also working through an ankle injury he picked up August 22nd against Baltimore. He sat out Wednesday’s practice
, though O’Connell said the goal was to “put the ankle behind him” and that he still hopes McCarthy can start. Wentz and Brosmer, a former Gopher, are both expected to play. Both teams come in at 1-1. Minnesota lost to Baltimore last week, and Denver fell at home to Green Bay, 33-13.
The Vikings open the regular season against the Packers.
