Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – Minnesota Vikings fans will get their first live look at Kyler Murray in purple on Saturday when the team opens its preseason schedule against the New York Giants.

The Minnesota Star Tribune reports the new QB1 will play with some starters, and that J.J. McCarthy is also expected to see action. Justin Jefferson and Christian Darrisaw appear likely to sit out. Head Coach Kevin O’Connell named Murray the starter on Tuesday, ending a competition that ran through the spring and the first two weeks of training camp.

Murray signed a one-year, $1.3 million contract with Minnesota on March 12th after his release by the Arizona Cardinals, who will pay him $35.5 million this season. The Cardinals took him with the No. 1 overall pick in 2019, and he made 87 starts across seven seasons in Arizona. The decision moves McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 draft, into the backup role after 10 career starts. Carson Wentz and Max Brosmer also remain in the quarterback room.

O’Connell said McCarthy will still get significant work.

Murray takes over a position that has turned over repeatedly in recent years. Minnesota will have a new Week 1 starter for the fourth straight season. Jefferson will join the FOX 9 and Vikings Radio Network simulcast during the third quarter. The pregame radio show starts at 10:00 a.m., and Vikings GameDay Live airs on FOX 9 in the Twin Cities at 11:00 a.m. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. Saturday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The Vikings host the Baltimore Ravens on August 22nd at 12:00 p.m. and travel to Denver on August 28th at 8:00 p.m. to close out the preseason, then open the regular season against Green Bay on Sunday, September 13th at U.S. Bank Stadium.
