NBA Free Agency Opens Tuesday With LeBron James Decision Looming

Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The NBA offseason hits another major turning point this week as the league’s free agency negotiating period opens Tuesday, June 30th at 6:00 p.m. Eastern, 5:00 p.m. Central. Teams can begin agreeing to deals at that point, though free agents cannot officially sign contracts until Monday, July 6th.

LeBron James once again headlines the class. The 41-year-old holds a player option with the Los Angeles Lakers, and his decision on whether to stay or test the market is one of the offseason’s biggest unknowns. James is coming off his 23rd season, and reports indicate the Golden State Warriors are among the teams prepared to pursue him if he becomes available.

The market features several other notable names. Detroit’s Jalen Duren, a restricted free agent, tops many rankings of the available class, though the Pistons and the young center are reportedly far apart in negotiations. Duren is now expected to explore a sign-and-trade, with the Sacramento Kings among the teams showing interest. The trade market has been every bit as active. Memphis sent guard Ja Morant to the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday, the latest in a string of blockbuster moves. The dominoes began falling even before last week’s NBA Draft, when Giannis Antetokounmpo was traded from Milwaukee to the Miami Heat, ending a 13-season run with the Bucks.

Closer to home, the Minnesota Timberwolves added to their backcourt by acquiring guard LaMelo Ball from the Charlotte Hornets, a move that reshapes the roster around the franchise’s young core.

Speculation also continues to swirl around Boston’s Jaylen Brown. The Celtics have remained actively engaged in trade discussions involving the 2024 NBA Finals MVP, who carries a salary of roughly $57.1 million next season and three years left on his contract. Brown averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists last season. Reports link a range of suitors to the All-NBA wing, including the Los Angeles Clippers, the Trail Blazers and the Denver Nuggets.
