BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Minnesota DNR is reporting a suspected case of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in a wild deer in the Bemidji area for the first time.
Officials said preliminary test results indicate CWD in an adult male harvested opening weekend of the firearms season about 10 miles south of Bemidji. The final test result is expected this week.
Test results are also pending on 700 other deer samples.
Conservation officers are encouraging hunters in the area to have their deer tested for CWD.
A white-tailed deer in Grand Rapids last year was the first wild deer in the region to test positive for the disease.
