DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – This year’s 4th of July fireworks in Detroit Lakes are set to be just as big if not bigger than last year.

Since the 1950s, residents and vacationers have lined the city beach, their back yards or viewed the fireworks display from their boats on the 4th of July and last year fireworks planners increased the show’s budget from $20,000 to $30,000 in an effort to celebrate Detroit Lakes’ 150th Anniversary. The show had so many positive reviews that organizers plan to make this year’s show just as big as last years.

“If you got to see the fireworks last year, they were amazing,” said Carrie Johnston with the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. “Last year we were able to add two extra barges…we shoot them [fireworks] from the middle of Little Detroit Lake on a boat barge, now we have three of them.”

The fireworks display will take place on Monday, July 4 at dusk (approximately 10 p.m.) with the best view from a pontoon on the lake or at the Detroit Lakes City Park and Detroit Lakes City Beach.
