DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – For the 7th straight year, Detroit Lakes will participate in the National Wreaths Across America Day.

Detroit Lakes, Becker County and White Earth will join the more than 2,500 participating locations across the country to remember and honor veterans on Saturday, Dec. 18.

“Detroit Lakes is one of the few cities in west-central Minnesota that participates in this program, seven years ago there was no other community west of Fort Snelling that did it in our state. This is a unique honor for us to keep this tradition alive,” said Tom Mortenson who helps organize the event.

Wreaths Across America started as a gesture of thanks that has grown into a national movement of dedicated volunteers and communities coming together to not only remember the nation’s fallen and honor their service, but to teach the next generation about the sacrifices made to live freely.

Events are planned for Veterans Memorial Park at 11 a.m., G.A.R .Park at 11:20 a.m., Crovisier Memorial Park at 1130 a.m., Oak Grove Cemetery at 11:45 a.m., and Holy Rosary Cemetery 12:15 p.m. on Saturday.

More than 255,000 wreaths will be laid across the country.
