DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – On Tuesday night at the Kent Freeman Arena in Detroit Lakes, the offense was king, as Breckenridge-Wahpeton and Detroit Lakes squared off in girls hockey. The game saw 17 goals between the two teams, with Breckenridge-Wahpeton narrowly defeating Detroit Lakes 9-8.
The win was the first in program history for the Blades, who are in their inaugural season as a member of the MSHSL. Before this year, the Blades played as a member team of the 19-U girls hockey league in North Dakota. The Blades are now a part of Section 6A and lost their first game to another Section 6A foe losing to River Lakes last Friday, 13-1.
Detroit Lakes jumped out to an early lead 31 seconds into the game, with Haley Stattelman scoring and Emma Coley getting the assist. The Blades answered back just over a minute later, with Lily Beyer getting credit for an unassisted goal. The Blades scored three additional goals in the first period, with Reagan Wohlers scoring twice and Anabel Pausch adding her name to the scoresheet. The Lakers were called for a major penalty at the 12:36 mark of the first period, which gave the Blades an extended powerplay. The Blades were able to score once on the powerplay. The Lakers were able to find the back of the net twice while killing off the major penalty, with Emma Coley scoring twice shorthanded in the final two minutes of the period. The Lakers went into the first-period intermission trailing 4-3.
The second period featured more scoring as both teams combined for six goals in the second period. The Blades put the puck in the net four times while the Lakers added two goals. Kaydence Thorsteinson picked up her first goal of the season, and Coley picked up another goal in the period to give herself the hat-trick. At the end of the second period, the score was 8-5 in favor of the Blades.
The only period the Lakers outscored the Blades was the third period as Detroit Lakes found the back of the net three times while the Blades scored one goal. Emma Coley added a goal at the 4:42 mark, and 7th grader Ella Larson scored her first goal of the season at the 9:08 mark. Haley Stattelman scored the last goal of the game with an assist going to 8th grader Brynn Erickson.
DL’s Emma Coley finished the night with four goals and two assists. The Blades’ Reagan Wohlers finished the game with three goals and one assist.
Despite giving up nine goals to the Blades, first-year goalie Emma Wahl made several remarkable saves as she faced 38 shots on goal. Detroit Lakes also put many shots on the Blades’ first-year goalie Kolle Schuler as DL put 30 shots on the net.
The loss drops the Lakers record to 0-4 on the season. The Lakers return to action on Monday when they take part in a tournament in Blaine. With the win, the Blades improve their record to 1-1 on the season. Next up for the Blades, they will travel to St. Cloud on Friday.
