Laker Volleyball Beats Frazee in Four Sets on Senior Night

Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The Laker volleyball team played their final home game of the regular season on Tuesday night, matching up against the Frazee Hornets. Detroit Lakes came away victorious, beating the Hornets 3-1 behind solid offensive performances by sophomore Grace Gunderson and junior Jaylynn Gunderson.

The first set was tied 12-12 when Detroit Lakes took the lead for good and took the first set 25-19. Jaylynn Gunderson had four kills in the first set to lead her team.

The Hornets bounced back in the second set as they took advantage of a defensive miscue by Detroit Lakes at the end of the set when two Lakers collided going for a ball. The Hornets won the back and forth set 26-24.

The Lakers jumped out to an early lead in the third set and never trailed as they beat Frazee in the third set 25-20. Grace Gunderson had three kills in the third set. Junior setter Kiah Gloege was on point with her passes all night and was a massive part of the win.

The fourth and final set was all Detroit Lakes once again as they were able to build a ten-point lead at 19-9 and hung on for the win 25-12.

With the loss, Frazee sees their record drop to 3-18. They will be back in action on Thursday, hosting the Perham Yellowjackets. The Hornets will close out their regular season next week when they host Pelican Rapids on Tuesday.

Detroit Lakes moves to 7-13 overall and will have a tournament on October 21st at Fergus Falls before the playoffs. The Lakers will have their first playoff game on Thursday, October 28th. The playoff seeds are still to be determined for Section 8AAA.

Before the game on Tuesday, Detroit Lakes honored their only senior on the roster, Lauren Kaiser. The ceremony featured speeches from head coach Lynnsey Machakaire and sophomore Ava Jones. Kaiser has been sidelined this season because of a shoulder injury. Despite not being able to play, she has remained on the team, and according to coach Machakaire, she serves as another coach.

Swimming: The Laker swim team beat Fosston-Bagley on the road on Tuesday, 66-28. Next up, Detroit Lakes will host the Section True Team meet on Saturday at 10 am at the DLCCC. The meet will feature Crookston, Fergus Falls Fosston-Bagley, The North (Warroad, BGMR, and Roseau), Park Rapids, Perham, and Thief River Falls.
