Laker Football Improves to 2-1 After Defense Shuts Out Thief River Falls

Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM)-

The Detroit Lakes Lakers football team improved 2-1 on the season with a 28-0 victory over Thief River Falls at Mollberg Field on Friday night.

Quarterback Bradly Swiers led a balanced offensive attack, setting career highs in passing attempts (13), completions (12), passing yards (174), and touchdowns (2).

The Laker defense continued their recent dominance of Thief River Falls’ offense, not allowing the Prowlers into the red zone and shutting them out for the fourth consecutive meeting. The Lakers have now outscored the Prowlers 199-0 over the last four meetings.

After a scoreless first quarter, Swiers connected with Ty Jones for a 13-yard touchdown ten seconds into the second quarter. Evan Thomas kicked the first of four extra points to give the Lakers a 7-0 lead. Swiers threw his second touchdown of the quarter with 26 seconds left, highlighted by a great catch by Chuck Kalina over the back of the defender to give DL a 14-0 lead.

Gavin Smith blocked a TRF punt late in the third quarter to set up first and goal from the Prowler 10, but the Lakers couldn’t punch it in.

After a silent third quarter, the Laker offense began clicking in the fourth. After catching a 32-yard pass that got the ball down to the one-yard line, Christian Solberg scored his fourth touchdown of the season with a one-yard run with 9:06 left. Ethan Carrier became the fourth different Laker to score a touchdown with a 34-yard run with 3:38 left in the game to give the Lakers a 28-0 lead.

The Lakers improved to 2-1 after the win and will prepare for a 2-1 Perham Yellowjackets squad that lost to Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 48-0 on Friday night. The kickoff from Perham on September 24th will be at 6:00 pm.

Thief River Falls to 0-3 and will travel to Fergus Falls to take on the undefeated Otters next Friday night.
