Laker Girls XC Finishes Fourth, Boys Eighth at Staples Meet

Staples, MN (KDLM) – The Detroit Lakes Girls Cross Country team finished fourth overall in an eight-team meet at the MN River Run at The Vintage Golf Course in Staples on Monday morning.

Junior Julia Steffl finished in fifth place with a time of 21:29.0. Freshman Isla Pender (23:33.8) finished in 14th place. Staples-Motley sophomore Kyanna Burton won the race with a time of 20:08.6. Burton is the eleventh-ranked runner in Class A.

Staples-Motley, the #2 ranked team in Class A, won the meet with 22 points. Park Rapids (70 points) finished second, and United North Central (75) finished third.

The Laker boys finished in eighth place out of nine teams in their race. Senior Cole Weber paced the Lakers with a 23rd place finish and a time of 20:03.5. Junior Micah Barburg was the second Laker runner in with a time of 21:55.2, good for a 32nd place finish. The boys race was won by Bertha-Hewitt eighth-grader Brady Rach (17:41.0)

#1 Staples-Motley won the meet with 38 points. The Fergus Falls Otters finished in second place overall with 53 points. Park Rapids Area (57 points) finished third.

The Lakers next meet is a home meet at Lakeview Golf Course on Thursday, September 9th at 4:30.
