DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – A Fergus Falls man has donated more than 1,200 bike helmets to children in Detroit Lakes since 1996.
Mike Heikes, who suffered a brain injury after a car accident in 1982 and spent more than 3 months recovering has dedicated his life to bike riding as a way to give back to the hospitals and charities that helped him recover. “Through those rides I’ve raised over $250,000 for charity and helmets and I started giving helmets away in 1999 to prevent kids from living through the effects of a severe brain injury and I’ve given away 22,000 helmets away since then,” he said.
Heikes, who has now written a book, FINDING PURPOSE In Being a Brain injury Survivor says the proceeds will help fund his Helmets For Kids program. The book details how Heikes found purpose in being a brain injury survivor and how he is fulfilling that purpose through charity and bike helmets to help prevent brain injuries in kids.
His book is available to purchase through Amazon.
