WADENA (KDLM) – Lakes Area seniors are being reminded to be on alert for phone scammers trying to convince elderly residents that their loved ones are in trouble.
The Wadena County Sheriff’s Office says residents should be on high alert for con artists pretending to be a grandchild in trouble and in need of emergency funds. Some grandparents— willing to come to the aid of a grandchild in need—quickly wire money to the impostor. The con artist may ask the grandparents not to contact the parents out of embarrassment or because the need is too urgent, helping the con artist avoid detection.
The Sheriff’s Office recommends that you do not answer the phone if you do not recognize the number and to never wire money or send gift cards and codes to anyone.
