DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – Smoke didn’t stop Detroit Lakes residents from celebrating the city’s 150th birthday, Thursday.
The weeklong celebration which began on Sunday, culminated in an official birthday party at the Detroit Lakes City Park on Thursday that featured a ribbon cutting and rededication of the city’s sailboat sculpture that has been moved from the City Beach to a plaza on North Shore Drive and Washington Avenue.
“This is an opportunity to celebrate the past and talk about the future – it’s fun to be part of it, it’s a big moment,” said Kelcey Klemm, Detroit Lakes City Administrator. “The future is bright for Detroit Lakes and I think we’re going to keep that going”
In an effort to preserve local history, the Becker County Museum buried a time capsule in the park filled with items donated by residents. More than 1,500 ice cream treats were given away and Matt Aakre performed a free concert at the City Bandshell to celebrate the city’s official birthday, July 29, 1871.
