Two Teens Nearly Drown After Being Sucked into Dam Bypass on Otter Tail Lake

OTTER TAIL (KDLM) – A Lidgerwood, ND man is being credited with rescuing a teen from drowning on Otter Tail Lake.

Police were called to a near drowning on Sunday, July 25 near the Highway 72 dam. A 14-year-old girl who was swimming got sucked under the water by a dam bypass. A 15-year-old boy went to help and was also sucked in the the bypass.

The girl was pushed out by the water, but the boy was stuck and couldn’t keep his head above water. Cooper Hinrichs pulled the boy out, likely saving his life according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office.

The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office has asked the public not to swim by dams and spillways and to use extreme caution when on or in the water due to low water levels.
