ST. PAUL (KDLM) – Minnesota officially adopted the “clean car” rules on Monday, but a majority of the controversial rules will be decided on by voters in 2024.
The new rules will require manufacturers and dealers to supply more electric vehicles for the Minnesota marketplace.
Senator Kent Eken says a compromise of the rules will actually push off a majority of the decision, “The Pollution Control Agency under Governor Walz was going to implement the California Clean Car Standards, which would require auto dealers to have a certain number of electric vehicles on their lot, but there was an agreement made that that decision would be pushed off until 2024. Basically it will be left up to the next election…its been kicked down the road and we’ll let the people decide.”
Governor Walz has said the rules will lead to cleaner air and help combat climate change, but opponents say the changes will swamp Minnesota dealers with more electric vehicles than customers want to buy, and force up car prices for everyone.
