Detroit Lakes Police Planning for Fun and Safe 4th of July Holiday

DETROIT LAKES (KDLM) – The Detroit Lakes Police Department will have additional patrols on duty over the 4th of July holiday to help ensure a fun and safe holiday weekend in the Lakes Area.

Across the country large gatherings and alcohol-influenced decision making during the holiday weekend tend to drive up calls for police service. An influx in Lakes Area vacationers over the weekend can also be a contributor.

“People need to keep in mind their alcohol consumption along with their surroundings, particularly if you’re consuming alcohol and are out in the boat – which is probably not the best decision – make sure you’re wearing a life jacket,” said Detroit Lakes Police Chief Steve Todd.

The Police Department will be keeping a close eye on the Detroit Lakes City Beach, alcohol and dogs are not allowed on the City Beach and Todd expects his officers to enforce those ordinances over the holiday. Additionally, fireworks are a bigger concern this year because of drought conditions throughout the state.

“Fireworks for the most part are illegal in Minnesota, we really haven’t had much rain this year, so you need to use careful discretion on using fireworks because of the dry vegetation conditions,” said Detroit Lakes Police Chief Steve Todd.

If a fire occurs due to fireworks, you may be held responsible for the cost of firefighting efforts and/or damage to private or public property.
