Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – The Minnesota Wild’s three-game winning streak is over after a 4-3 overtime loss to the New York Islanders Thursday night at Grand Casino Arena.
Islanders rookie defenseman Matthew Schaefer scored the game-winner just 33 seconds into overtime, beating Wild goalie Jesper Wallstedt from the right circle on a breakaway. It was Schaefer’s second goal of the night.
Minnesota got off to a fast start when Joel Eriksson Ek scored 27 seconds into the game. Schaefer tied it late in the first period, and Bo Horvat put New York ahead early in the second with a power-play goal. Quinn Hughes evened the score at 2-2 with under three minutes left in the second period.
Adam Pelech gave the Islanders a 3-2 lead in the third period before Matt Boldy tied it with 3:53 left in regulation, cashing in on a Schaefer turnover to force overtime.
Wallstedt finished with 22 saves for Minnesota. Ilya Sorokin also stopped 22 shots for the Islanders, who played most of the game with five defensemen after Ryan Pulock left with an upper-body injury less than a minute into the game.
The overtime loss still earns the Central Division-leading Wild a point. Minnesota is now 9-3-and-3 on the season.
The Wild open a two-game road trip Sunday, November 1st, in Washington.
