Detroit Lakes, MN (KDLM) – ESPN reports star guard Anthony Edwards will undergo an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee that could keep him out up to two months. The Athletic reports the surgery is set for Thursday, and the team expects to have a clearer recovery timeline afterward. That report says the absence could stretch past two months, meaning Edwards may not return until January.
The Timberwolves had not publicly confirmed the procedure as of Tuesday night. The Star Tribune reports the team is expected to release more details on the procedure and his prognosis today.
The news came just one day after one of the best games of Edwards’ young season. He was listed as questionable on the injury report before Monday night’s game in Cleveland, but played a season-high 41 minutes and scored a game-high 47 points in a 127-125 overtime loss to the Cavaliers.
The right knee has been a recurring problem. Edwards dealt with patellofemoral pain syndrome, commonly known as runner’s knee, last season and missed 11 of Minnesota’s final 14 regular season games. He played in just 61 games overall, mostly because of knee trouble. He rested the knee over the summer, but it flared up again in the opening games of this season.
The injury will be the longest absence of Edwards’ career. A two-month layoff would keep him out roughly 25 games and likely through Minnesota’s Christmas Day game against Oklahoma City. It would also drop him below the NBA’s 65-game minimum to qualify for end-of-season awards like MVP and All-NBA.
With Edwards out, more of the scoring load is expected to fall on new backcourt partner LaMelo Ball.
The Timberwolves (3-1) are trying to bounce back from their first loss of the season after opening with three straight wins. Minnesota returns home to host the Golden State Warriors tonight at Target Center.
